Calverton And Keyworth To Represent Notts In The Gilbert Cup At Lord's

Nottinghamshire will be represented by two teams in the Royal London Gilbert Cup which will be played during the interval of the Royal London One-Day Cup final at Lord’s.

Both Calverton Boys Under 11s and Keyworth Girls Under 11s will play on the outfield on Saturday with both sides delighted with the prospect of play at the Home Of Cricket.

“The boys are incredibly excited,” said Calverton Team Manager Scott Andrew.

“A number of them were at our cricket club on the Friday night listening to the climax of the semi-final and needless to say they were jumping for joy when the winning runs were hit.

“The boys had an amazing time playing on the outfield at Trent Bridge, they can't believe they have the opportunity to play at Lords”

Meanwhile the final marks a steady rise in the number of girls getting involved with cricket at Keyworth.

“It wasn’t until 2014 that we first introduced cricket for female players – 6 x 1 hour ‘taster’ sessions and 6 primary school girls attended,” said Team Manager Barry Baker.

“Now in 2017 we have 29 girls aged 7 years to 13 years regularly playing cricket in one hard ball team and two soft ball ‘kwik cricket’ teams.

“Our Under 11 girls winning a tight match against the girls of Gedling Colliery at Trent Bridge and earning the opportunity to play at Lord’s after Nottinghamshire's tremendous performance against Essex is simply the icing on the cake.”

He added: “The girls are very excited about the prospect of appearing at Lords and the club will be presenting them with special commemorative club shirts and caps to mark the special occasion.”

For Calverton, the chance to appear at Lord’s has meant some sacrifices have had to be made.

“One of the boys was meant to be away on holiday, he loves his cricket so much so that he has persuaded his parents to rearrange their holiday, so as he can have the experience,” said Andrew.

“The boys are going to have to be up really early on the Saturday morning, but I don't envisage getting up is going to be an issue for them.

"One parent has reported sleepless nights in anticipation already.

“Another boys parents are in the process of moving to Inverness, with Dad already being up there. He is making the journey down to Lords on Saturday to support him.”
